Red Star Chickens
The Red Star (also called the ISA Brown) sex link chicken is one of the best brown egg laying breeds.
They are known by many different names including Golden Comet, Red Sex-Links, Golden Buff,
Golden Sex-Links, and Cinnamon Queen). These brown egg layers are easy to raise, lay lots of large
brown eggs (360 per year on average) and have a good feed-conversion ratio. Mature hens have
reddish brown feathers with flecks of white throughout.
The Red Star is a hybrid breed of Sex-Linkable Chickens. It is being produced by crossing a Rhode
Island Red or a New Hampshire rooster with a White Plymouth Rock, a Rhode Island White, a Silver
Laced Wyandotte, or a Delaware hen.
They are medium-sized chickens, typically weighing around 8 (roosters) and 6 lbs (hens) for fully
grown adults. A huge advantage to hybrid breeds is the ability to tell their gender by appearance when
they're just one day old. If a Red Star chick is a female they'll be red, orange, or somewhere in
between.
